Mike Morhaime wrote us a letter? Patch 1.1? What the hell is going on? Diablo III Status Update Episode 50!

Mike Morhaime has only made one official post on Blizzard’s official website, personally, ever. This was the “soon-was-too-soon” post regarding the Diablo III release date delay. Now he is back, making a lengthy write up to the community, and even apologizing for certain elements of the game. This is starting to sound like FFXIV all over again…

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, children of all ages, I present to you Diablo III Status Update episode 50. On today’s episode, I give a concise opinion about the letter that Mike Morhaime wrote the community, and express my hopes and concerns for the future. This game is starting to sound a bit like FFXIV, and for those of you that don’t know, it’s time for story time.

FFXI was my first MMORPG. It was one of my only MMORPGs, and to this day it holds a special place in my heart. If I won the lottery and had nothing to do everyday, I would probably continue to play the original FFXI published in 2001. The game was mind blowing, and the gameplay still holds a special place in my heart. The graphics aren’t bad to look at either, and the title was published over a decade ago. That being said, FFXIV was basically supposed to be FFXI-2. It had all of the same races, with different names and backstories, but they were virtually identical in appearance and stats.

Long story short, the game is being re-released at the end of this year because it’s initial launch in 2010 was so poor.It was the most disappointing game of the year for thousands of fans, and the game even went free to play for several months. I have never seen graphics as beautiful as FFXIV, and yet the content was so poor it was an absolute flop. The director of the project has written dozens of letters to the community, much like Mr. Morhaime’s lengthy response, apologizing for the game and promising specific improvements.

My point in bringing up this story is that I expect Diablo III to go forth in the same way that FFXIV is, but to a lesser extent. I might make good money playing Diablo III, but I want to play more than the Auction House. I want PvP, I want more PvE, I want a better interface, and god damn it, I don’t want any more rubberbanding (which my SSD has helped a lot, by the way).

So, thanks for watching, and if you feel so inclined to watch this episode of Status Update, my personal Diablo III opinion vlog, on YouTube, please do so.
